New Jersey riding mixes horse farm country with protected forest and shore. In the Pine Barrens, Wharton State Forest opens its sandy roads to horseback riders year-round, and from October through April riders can bring their own horses onto the ocean beach at Island Beach State Park with a reservation. Stables in the horse country of Hunterdon, Somerset and Monmouth counties offer riding lessons, boarding and guided trail rides.
