Riding in Hawaii follows the paniolo tradition, Hawaiian cowboy culture that began in 1832, when California vaqueros came to teach ranching. On Hawaii Island, rides cross cattle ranches on Kohala Mountain above Waimea and along the Hamakua Coast. Maui has ranch rides in the West Maui Mountains, and Haleakala National Park allows riders with their own horses on wilderness trails, including the Kaupo Trail. Oahu’s windward valleys and Kauai’s Poipu coast have ranch rides too.
