Inside the parks or outside?

Inside Yellowstone, guided trail rides leave from corrals run under the park’s concession contracts, and a few permitted outfitters take day rides and pack trips into the park’s backcountry. Rides inside the park are short and popular, so book early for July and August.

Outside the parks, ranches and outfitters ride on private land and in the surrounding national forests: the Custer Gallatin in Montana, the Shoshone and the Bridger-Teton in Wyoming, and the Caribou-Targhee in Idaho. Groups are often smaller, rides can be much longer, and several outfitters run multi-day pack trips into the wilderness areas.

Before you book

  • Check the minimum age and the rider weight limit on each listing: most outfitters set both.
  • Wear long pants and closed shoes with a small heel, and ask the outfitter about helmets.
  • Summer rides fill up weeks ahead, especially in July and near the park entrances.
  • Tips for guides and wranglers are customary, and some businesses add a gratuity to the price.
