Multi-day trips into the wilderness with guides, pack horses and a camp cook.
A pack trip is several days on horseback in the backcountry, with guides, pack horses or mules carrying the gear, and a camp set up for you each night. The wilderness areas around Yellowstone, such as the Absaroka-Beartooth, the Teton and the Washakie, are some of the best-known pack trip country in the lower 48 states.
What a pack trip costs
Pack trips cost $375 to $772 per person per day among the outfitters we list. The price usually covers horses, guides, meals and camp gear. Check what is not included: fishing licenses, park entry and gratuities are sometimes extra.
What to expect
- Trips last from two nights to a week or more, mostly in summer and early fall.
- Many outfitters set a minimum group size or charge more for small parties.
- Some trips combine riding with fishing on high lakes, and a few enter Yellowstone itself.
- Riding experience helps, but most outfitters take fit beginners and match horses to riders.
